I’ve been talking about it for years, but I’ve finally done it—created my own Web site.
The main purpose is to share my work with potential clients and publishers, but it’s also a chance for me to consolidate the work I’ve done over the years, from my activism, journalism, and illustration in the early ‘90s through my career as an editor and educator up to my most current work—which takes me back to where I began with my main love, writing. Today, I continue to love editing and working with authors and publishers, but I am more prolific than ever, writing everything from creative and community-conscious communications for for-profit companies and nonprofits and monthly reviews for arts magazines, to award-winning poetry.

A new anthology I’m in, Solace in So Many Words, is hot off the presses and available at your local independent bookseller as well as on Amazon. It’s an honor to be in the same book with many of my favorite writers, including T.C. Boyle, Ellen Bass, Antler, and Philip Levine, among many others. Brava to Ellen Wade Beals for assembling a collection. Thomas Moore, author of Care of the Soul, says, “Each entry feels fresh, as it offers another angle on finding a way to remain intact through life’s complexity.”

Interview with Brent Calderwood now on itunes!
Bay Area singer-songwriter Russell David’s great podcast show, simplemuzik, has been broadcast for several years at simplemuzik.net. But fans of local indie bare-bones music are in for a treat now that all 200-something episodes are available for free download! Back in September 2008 I did an hourlong interview and performance with Russell that aired over two weeks. Russell is a great, generous interviewer, and as a result, the conversations he has are incisive and enlightening. If you want to see if my interviews met that standard, please give them a listen. They’re number 96—97. Number 96 is the first and better one, in my humble opinion. http://itunes.apple.com/lk/podcast/simple-muzik-podcast/id191282326

It was way back in August 2008 that I played guitar and discussed my history as a youth activist for the then-unfinished film The Butch Factor [thebutchfactor.com]. The film was released in June 2009 to enthusiastic audiences and now seems to have a life of its own. A documentary by Christopher Hines that explores how gay men think and feel about masculinity and identity, it’s shown in film festivals all over the world, been called “Extremely entertaining and informative!” by critics like Kevin Thomas, and aired on LOGO last year; and now, on top of all that, it’s on Netflix Streaming, so you can watch it without even leaving your home! According to imdb.com, I star as “Himself” in the film. Other Himselves include: prison guard Vincent Calvarese, queer scholar extraordinaire Trevor Hoppe , and the band The Ex-Boyfriends.

I was thrilled when B.A.R. Calendar Editor Jim Provenzano asked me to be on the August 2010 Cover of BarTab, the new monthly bar and club magazine from the Bay Area Reporter. I share the cover with drag performer Oxana Olsen and Chaps bartender/cutie Ricky Maldonado. The theme is getting out of town, so Jim asked me where I perform my songs and where I like to hang out when I’m not in SF. You can read the entire issue here.

The San Francisco Public Library has chosen the winners of its annual Poets 11 contest. Poet Laureate and North Beach poet-icon Jack Hirschman was the judge, and I was a winner for San Francisco’s Sunset District, one of the city’s eleven neighborhoods. Readings and a book are soon to follow. You can order the book here.
